Voltaire is very against established religion, isn't he, a hierarchy of religion? How important is that? OK, so I think the fact that he seems to be attacking optimism is sort of a red herring. It's a frame. What he really wants to attach is the abuses of power and hypocrisy. So by setting it up to say everything is for the best in all best of all possible worlds, then having this nitwit hero running around going, "This is very good" He has all of these experiences which one after the other relate to actual abuses or actual events which ended up in an abuse of power.
