The author's parents were non-religious and stayed away from churches as far as they could because going to church would have jeopardized their jobs. He moved with his wife, who was eight months pregnant at the time, to Massachusetts where neither Catholic nor Lutheran churches wanted to accept them. The couple found a Unitarian Church in Bedford, Massachusetts; he started translating there for Hungarian speaking Unitarians.
