The Rise of the Hellfire Clubs in Britain
The No Noses Club was a club which only admitted members who had lost their noses to advanced cases of syphilis. Ned Ward's exaggerations were even noted in the 18th century, and his book was eventually reprinted as satirical reflections on clubs. But despite his imaginative exaggerations, he was commenting on a very real phenomenon that was sweeping British society in the early 18th century: private or semi-private clubs.
