Is There a Culture of Materialism in Egyptology?

In an ideal world, I suppose someone in academia who's studying these things would be more open to some underlying reality behind the cut. But there does still appear to be that kind of monolithic cultural assumption of materialism when they're operating in a professional space. So my second book, Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom, is about the mystical experiences of scholars of mysticism. If you really corner or given of beers to a particular intellectual or pretty scholar of mysticism, what you'll eventually discover is they had some series of mystical events in their lives. There's essentially closeted mystics.
