The Mexican Revolution: A History

The launching of the Maximato coincides with the end of the Cristera War, which had now been raging for three years. The casualty numbers are brutal: Upwards of 100,000 dead on both sides. In 1926, there were about 4,400 priests in Mexico. By the early 1930s, there were just 334 in the whole country.
