How to Trust Tests
There is maintainability and readability. I know that there are people like Jim Newkirk and Brad Wilson that don't feel that set up and tear down is an important part of tests. It really is about whether you have a sense of safety, because the test is supposed to provide a sense of comfort. And if people don't trust the tests, either they need to write more tests or something in the test is wrong. That brings us full circle to your first pillar: Are they testing? Now, what were the other two pillars again?
