In the final chapter we cut to Mr. Craven who has been absent on holiday in Europe as he often is. But one night when staying on Lake Como he dreams of his wife who calls his name and asks him to come and find her in the garden. The next morning he receives a letter from Susan Sauerby who was Dickon and Martha the Nurse's mother, the mother of 12. She has seen Colin and his improvement and in the letter implores Mr.Craven to return home to see his son as his wife would want him to.
