Language, Language Change and Language Dispersal

Linguistics is a tool for understanding how languages change over time, and how they're related to one another. By 12 hundred b c, we can be quite certain that a number of indo european languages were established across the continent. But language does not map directly on to identities, or at least on to the identities we expect people to have. Sometimes language use is a sign of ethnic origin, sometimes of tribal belongings, sometimes of religious affiliation. And other times it's a sign of political allegiance.
