The early success of antibiotics pharmacology has kind of colored the way that we approach drug discovery in general especially in the oncology field. A lot of decision theoretic math circa 2016 led to the view that model quality beats quantity right i.e. it's better to test a small number of therapeutic candidates in a really good model than a very large number of therapeutic candidate selected from the same universe for label identity. The answer drops out of decision theory if you look at the trade-off between quality and quantity around antimicrobials. We just need to solve the incentive and financial problems in antibiotic drug discovery.
