The Queen's Formative Years
I think the queen's childhood and adolescence were her formative years in terms of the war, training as an ambulance driver. The personality that she retained throughout her reign was one that was created during her young years. She saw how monarchs could get in trouble if they got involved in politics. Frugality, restraint and self-sacrifice were important during the war years. I think it's very significant that the queen never really spoke very much about her experiences, her personal life, her feelings.
