What Was It Ever Realistic to Think That Unipolarity Would Go on Indefinitely?

I'm fascinated by the brevity of the period of unipolarity, whether or not it could have been sustained. And I'm also interested in how and when the US began to move from having a view of international relations that makes much more space for dealing with countries that don't share our values.
