The Evolution of Marsupials
When Pangea broke up, which was about 150 million years ago, all the continents were massed together. It appears that when those continents were joined together as Gondwana, marsupials seem to have appeared in South America. But what happened after that is that because the continental plates were moving around and Antarctica moved south, Australia moved north. So animals that developed in South America no longer could escape into Australia. The last selection strategy which the marsupials employed worked incredibly well for tens of millions of years. For example, if you go to River'sly Station in Australia, there is an incredibly diverse marsupial fauna fossilized there.
