The Role of Mirror Neurons in the Brain

There are no such things as mirror neurons, like some special kind of cell type that's in the brain. They were predicted, but they were not found. But something else was also predicted back in the late 1980s by Antonio DiMazio. He talked about the brain being organized as networks converging and then diverging again back out. And his thinking on that was very much commensurate with others thinking about the notion of goal directed action and perception. The idea I think is it's not that there are special neurons that are firing when we see another person do the thing right, but that we are imposing our expectations onto the world.
