The study compared the results to this one to 10 scale. That's the gold standard that's been validated in a number of different data sets. There was a slight bias towards a higher RPE rating with the five-point scale. It also appeared that there was some poor validity in the five and the 10-point facial recognition scale for untrained, so people who had not exercised much before weren't very fit.
