Christian Missionaries on Taiwan After World War II
In the post-treaty port era, there were several noted Christians who came to Taiwan in the wake of the 1858 Treaty of Tianjin. Missionaries often unintentionally got all tangled up in the general xenophobia of the times. After 1949, Christian missionaries were showed the door in China and about 4,000 Protestant and 6,500 Catholic missionaries had to find someplace else to carry on their work. In this post-World War II, post-Civil War era, missionaries started coming in much greater numbers.
