The Tendency Was Not a Sign of Despair
She was wilful and morally pliable. That was no excuse for bad behaviour, but it was an explanation. To her, the temptation was not a sign of despair, but a sane acknowledgment of the world we live in. She loved two things more than anything else in the world, socks and milk chicks. The one kept your feet warm, and the other warmed your heart.
