What Is the Repressive Hypothesis?

I'm wondering if you can talk about some of the issues that you raise here. One idea you explore is something called the repressive hypothesis. So there's always this rhetoric that gay zealous beings were suppressed in the Mao era and now is China's reform and opening up. They have been liberated and they are bravely either embracing or celebrating their sexualities, etc. This would constitute the kind of dominant discourse about gay culture in China.
