In ancient Indian texts, authors are not at all willing to take credit. You always want to pass the credit back to their guru or to the lineage of teachers. It's very important to give citations and references and there are also rankings. If you are a scholar, how many times have you been quoted? And everybody is very very careful to see that your index is high enough that others are quoting your work. There are even people who steal credit from others and pass it off as their own. That's how philosophy was done in ancient India.
