Laura Dewey Bridgman was born in New Hampshire on December 21, 1829 to a farming family. She lost her sense of hearing, sight and smell when she was 24 months old. When she was seven, there was a school nearby called the Perkins School for the Blind. Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe taught her how to communicate using familiar objects.
