Are Long Term Missions Just Not Practical?

The surface of mars also has deadly amounts of radiation because the atmospere is so thin. There may be ways to shield settlers on that planet that's far better, far better than aluminum shielding. So perhaps we can't have long term settlements there. But short trips to mars could work fine, but you'd have to leave.
