What Is a Council of the Church?
At the beginning of the church's history, in the 3rd and 4th century, there was just a lot. There were several ecumenical councils. These are ecumenical by the fact that they had a kind of universal participation. So bishops from all over the Christian world participated in these councils. They also established doctrine, which was universally received as well.
