Gnosticism was a loose collection of beliefs that were around in the early centuries of the christian church. The gnostic movement is promoted, and still promotes, actually, the idea that you can escape the body and the physical realm if you have the right kind of secret knowledge. It's not much of a leap from that to what sillican valley is doing which is attempting to transcend the messy, horribleness of physical reality.
