The History of the Huashteks

The Huashtek lived on Mexico's northern Gulf coast, in the area around modern Vera Cruz. They had a flourishing city culture between 10th and 15th centuries but were eventually liquidated by the Aztecs. There is very little now that would enable us to reconstruct their world or ideas. So if we want the Huashtek to speak to us directly, we have to go to the objects they left behind. Among the most eloquent of them are highly distinctive stone statues.
