The Identification of Darius the Mede and Cyrus the Persian
The theory is that darius was the name given to cyrus at his birth by his mother, mandane of media. Cyrus then joined together the kingdoms of media and persia in his own person. It's important to note that royal names and titles were often held by several different figures over the history of these kingdoms. We see something similar in modern royalty.
