The author grew up in a homogeneous society, where everyone wears similar clothes. When president nixon visited china he started what's called an amazing week were the world started to change and china open to the world. He was sent away from major cities so there couldn't be any other studentand was then sent away to northern china. The book is about his experiences growing up as one of those kids who wanted to become a diplomat but got into trouble for wearing blue jeans.
