The Taxes of Royalties in India
India gets a right to tax these royalties at the rate of 15% on the gross amount of these royalties which are paid out to UK. Unilever UK can claim a credit for this 15% tax which is withheld in India against the corporate tax liability that it has on such royalty payments in the UK. In financial year 2022, HUL paid over 3500 crore rupees of dividend to Unilever, while the royalty paid was around 800 crore rupees.
