White settlers used the texas rangers as a mercenary force against indigenous peoples. The comanche wars were a brutal series of conflicts that crossed the line into outright ethnic cleansing on a number of occasions. One of these ethnic cleansing moments would be the red fork massacre of 18 forty, when a team of texas volunteer rangers surrounded a comanche village and opened fire.
