The story of what happened to Emily Dickinson's poems after her death is so involved and so much back and forth that I am literally going to recommend a book right now. There was a man named Thomas Johnson, who basically went back to the originals and erased those decades of editing and word replacements and punctuation deletions. He attempted to put them in some sort of chronological order, which was something that hadn't ever been done before.
