The Arms Race and the Saber Tooth Cat
An arms race can start to run its course with something like the saber tooth cat. Sexual selection is what it's called when males compete for access to females. Members of one sex, male or female competition for access to the other. That's sort of the pervasive, most widespread phenomenon that tends to lead to extravagance and to the evolution of these things that are absurd.
