The Cotton Gin: The First Industrial Revolution

Eli Whitney was a teenager when the 13 colonies finally defeated the British in 1783. The amount of cotton shipped from the Caribbean to Great Britain tripled in the 1780s. Between 1800 and 1810, Indian sales of cotton goods fell by more than 75%. Weavers who led the world in textile production for centuries were unable to compete.
