The journey involved deception and breaking the law, but it was the only possible way you could travel someone because of the danger of kidnapping. The poorest go overland, through the desert, through the nimrose border, down into pakistan and over into iron. Is an extremely arduous trip. Goes through territory controlled by insurgents and drug smuggling gangs. There's a lot of violence, but it is the cheapest way, and you don't need any documents. So at least for poor afghans.
