Fusion could be used to replace the scrapped plans for the Nerva rockets back in the 60s and 70s. The original plan was that Nerva systems would be used to travel to Mars to the outer planets. But as powerful as a Nerva system using 1960s fission technology would have been, imagine what you might be able to do with fusion.
