The Role of Race in School Disparities

The moderate association between explicit and implicit racial bias may explain, might not, but it may explain why racial disparities in school outcomes can continue to exist. White fragility refers to racial stress experiences a result of various types of challenges to the sense of privilege associated with being white. Such challenges are purported to trigger negative emotions and internalizing or externalizing defensive behaviors. At the same time, lab-based social psychology research studies with white participants have demonstrated that positive cues about social connectedness, shared group membership, and engaging in the authentic cultural activities of diverse groups can decrease implicit bias.
