The Encyclopaedia Is Counter to It
There was no free press in eighteenth century france. Publishers had to apply for permission from the government to publish new texts. The encyclopaedia also pushed back against the intellectual norms of the time. It aimed to break down barriers between different academic studies and create a single work that would provide knowledge across the disciplines.
