Is There a Tradition of Prayer for the Dead?
Praying for the dead is a very ancient custom of the church. We read names of our dominicans who have passed on that day, then we pray for them. In a sense, we're always shooting up prayers for the dead. It's because christ came to save, and he came to use instruments, rational instruments, for salvation. He doesn't have to do it an do whatever he wants, but he likes us to be able to participate in helping others. Metaphors are just exploding all over the place, but that's when you talk about god and how god works the world.
