The Confirmatory End of the Continuum
I think the word confirmatory kind of dooms us from the beginning, not just in these types of analysis, but in other types of analysis as well. Think it's completely true that exploratory factor analysis, even though we can think of exploratory s as defining one end of a continuum. In their practice, you're not really near the end of the continuum. You're using filters that pull you in more toward the centre. A purist, i think, would say that confirmatory factor analysis really should be the other end of the spectrum. And when you do that, you are letting data fit, data model fit, be your guide.
