1.01 Introduction & The Three Estates

French Revolution & Napoleon (Grey History)

CHAPTER

The First Estate

The first estate owned ten % of french land. Yet those ten thousand seats were being occupied by roughly 500 people. This goes to the very heart of feudalism. For feudalism to work, the position of the king in society needed to be sacred. With the help of the catholic church, the king of france ruled by a notion known as divine right. In essence, the king ought to be the boss because god said so. It was his divine right to rule. Thete can be seen countless times throughout history,. across a number of societies, cultures and religions. A deal between church and state.
