The Rise of REITs
In 72 REITs were only worth in the US about one and a half billion, not a lot of money. But in 2016, they were worth 1.8 trillion, a thousand fold increase. This is largely a process of the neoliberal state making real estate a sexier investment. So you can not just own these properties, but service them. And that's one of the biggest sectors. I want to think about internet infrastructure as another kind of real estate asset - like collateralized debt obligations in the 2008 crisis.
