Malaria Control Persisted in the Canal Zone
When the US took over canal construction, they hired a guy named William Crawford Gorgas to act as medical specialists. He put in screens, drained swamps, oiled puddles and fumigated buildings in the area known as the canal zone. As a result, malaria was more or less driven from that part of Panama,. But not outside it. Only in those areas that he directly targeted, which, of course, were the areas where the Americans were living.
