Bishop Lamy's First Diocesan Bishop
Bishop Lamy was the first diocesan bishop of New Mexico. His early efforts were directed to reforming the New Mexico church. He also suppressed religious brotherhood societies within individual communities. The apostolic vicariet of New Mexico became a diocese in 1853.
