Do You Have to Place a Greater Value on One Life Over Another?
I wouldn't say that being a member of the species homo sapien automatically means that your life is more valuable than a member of any other species. I would say that beings who have cognitive capacities that enable them to think about their lives and think about the lives of others whom they love and care for in ways that are different ... It's a greater tragedy when they die prematurely than when those other beings die prematurely. So, I don't think of the lives of all sentient beings as being of equal value. But I do think of their suffering as being equally important when we're talking about similar kinds and similar quantities of suffering,. but not the preservation of their lives.
