The Paper Son Phenomenon

My grandfather, when he came over during World War II in 1938, had to come over under somebody else's identity. That was particularly heartbreaking, given how proud he was of the work that his grandfather had done. And a couple of years when Chinese exclusion went off the books, and Chinese were then able to become naturalized, my great grandfather and my grandfather tried as quickly as possible to naturalize. Because they felt so much that, you know, I mean, they had lived here for so long, and they really felt so much as they were Americans. For us to sit with that is quite profound, I think.
