Why People Believe in Conspiracy Theories

A sociological explanation for why people believe in conspiracy theories is that they provide explanations for things that are difficult to explain. i'm not sure if the lot of the conspiracy theories i've heard are particularly comforting, though itsteadf doesn't sit easily with me as an explanation. I'd be more inclined to say that people belief in conspiracy theories because they don't trust institutions. Whether or not the specific conspiracy theory in question is true or even reasonable in any way, it is generally reasonable that people have a certain amount of mistrust for institutions.
