Vedanta says it is not the object which is giving you happiness. The experience to joy is our own joy which is being reflected in the mind. Sridharam Krishna gave another gruesome example of a dog eating its own blood and thinking it was so tasty. We are tasting our own joy, but we think it is that dry old bone which is giving us joy. There is the Vedantic analysis of spiritual joy where it is based on renunciation. You let go of that mad pursuit, but it has to be genuine letting go. If I just give up those desires, the mind should calm down by itself. That is the psychology of spiritual joy.
