The vast majority of those killed for sport in the Roman world weren't specially trained gladiators. Prisoners were drawn from these same ranks, or voluntarily forfeited whatever status they had once helped. For a slave, crucifixion was an entirely appropriate form of death, but for a citizen, it was unthinkable.
