We will not feel truly safe until we have made AI that is beyond all debate feeling. We can't tell the difference between an imitation and the real thing. If chat GPT was in charge of decisions like whether you should get into college, or cancer treatment, we're going to hold it to a very high standard. But even that won't be enough. To cross that final bridge to become our true companion, AI will have to be able to suffer.
