The Rise of Self-Service in the Retail Industry
Sam Jotta opened his first Ben Franklin's variety store in Bentonville, Arkansas in July 1950. He was inspired by the self-service style of a franchise he saw in Minnesota. The new model allowed customers to shop for items on their own rather than having clerks at multiple parts of the store. In 1952 Sam converted a former Kroger's grocery store in Fayetteville, Arkansas Into the second Walton's five and dime. Over the next several years with buds help Sam opened more stores in more small towns places like Berryville, Arkansas and St. Louis.
