McDougall says souls are made of a space-filling substance that is subject to gravity, meaning it has mass. That's out of sync with classic theological views on the nature of the soul in Christian and Catholic theology. "The church has infallibly defined that the two realms are not the same thing," he says. But if spirit and matter are two different manifestations of one underlying thing, then they could be reconciled.
