Researchers have identified the stem cells involved in deer antlers' rapid development. Once one set of antlers has been shed, these cells quickly begin to develop into new cartilage and bone. When the team transplanted one subgroup of these cells onto the foreheads of mice, the rodents grew antler-like structures within 45 days. Authors suggest that these stem cells could ultimately lead to treatments for bone and cartilage injuries.
