Ritual sacrifice, self-mutilation and blood sacrifices were at the absolute core of everything they believed in. Experts believe there was somewhere between 1000 to 25,000 human sacrifices a year due to the need to sacrifice humans when in battle. The high priest would sometimes stab the victim in the chest with its sacred dagger and actually dig out their heart. After removing their heart the high priest would then raise up the still pulsing organ for everyone to see.
